I often say that the best part of any day is the sunrise and today was yet again proof, I am right in my own mind. Trying to sleep last night was tough, my mind swirling around how much snow was Kirkwood blessed with during this seemingly unexpected system… It’s early and we all know that, but there is something about a first snow that drives that passion to boil inside of our collective soul.
As a Kirkwood a·fi·ci·o·na·do I felt compelled to go get some footage this morning, and I got some banger’s for sure. As I tossed last night listening to the seemingly non-stop rain at lake level I set my agenda be up at the crack of dawn, Cup:O:Joe in hand, Sakima by my side and off to Kirkwood we would go… Yep, it all happened just like that!
It's 5am – My eyes pop open, sit up and scan the surrounding peaks from the Cooper-Reuter Hippie Haus, Snow! Next steps - a strong Cup:O, Camera, Sakima, Keys and we’re off! As we cross over Luther Pass I cannot keep my eyes of the Carson Pass in the distance, at last glance she was barren of snow… This morning with the early morning sun catching her just right my heart begins to pound and the first real thoughts of winter hit home!
Junction of SR89 & SR88 - the first “Chain Control” of the season has been mandated! Being a card carrying Subaru holder, I don’t even blink, our mission, capture first snow footage @KirkwoodMtn! Below are the images of Kirkwood on Sept 21st 2013..look at the
The perfect place for an early morning Cup:OJoe. The Kirkwood Inn, Big breakfast, Hot coffee! Amazing pancakes!
After you pass the Kirkwood Inn on SR88, your next visual is breathtaking…
The journey this morning was well worth the effort… As I drive into the valley I cannot keep my eyes on the road in front of me, white peaks, jagged rock & volcanic spines…..
Sakima & I hike around the base, the sun kissing the peaks, the temps in the neighborhood of 27ish. Snow is light, just around 3” or 4” at the base most likely 4” + mid mountain to the peak!
After a few shots, we pack it up and head back to the Hippie HAUS to enjoy the day…
